March, 04, 2014 – The design of Sydney’s latest tower will reshape the city’s busy streets from ground level to skyline.

Incorporating a new, publicly-accessible laneway linking Kent and Clarence streets, the much-anticipated, $250-million residential development from Sydney-based property developer Crown Group, Sydney by Crown, is set to add a new dimension to navigating Sydney streets.

The pedestrian-only laneway created by Crown Group will connect with Sydney’s historic Skittle Lane, off King Street to create a T-shaped lane.

Flanked by 11 new cafes, restaurants and retail fashion stores, the laneway through Sydney by Crown will bring a fresh, urban element to Sydney’s Central Business District.

Above street level, the architecturally designed building will be 25-storeys tall, with a striking curved steel roof feature, taking its place in Sydney’s skyline.

Designed by Sydney-based Koichi Takada Architects, Sydney by Crown features heritage influenced archways on lower levels inspired by the design of Sydney’s early-20th century buildings, transitioning to a modern glass-and-steel tower.

Construction is expected to begin in mid-2014.

Crown Group CEO Iwan Sunito said Crown Group had clear vision to create a building which reflected the truly global nature of Sydney, where corporations, brands, designs and people from around the world come together.

The 220-apartment development will feature boutique five-star serviced apartments set to attract visitors from across the globe.

“Although still a relatively young city by global standards, Sydney is capturing the attention of the world, taking its place among cities like New York, Tokyo and London,”

“Sydney by Crown encapsulates the true essence of Sydney – fusing the old and the new with a world-class design by Japanese-Australian architect Koichi Takada,”

“Koichi has been brave in creating the winning design for Sydney by Crown featuring a heritage-inspired lower façade and elegant tower above,”

“Sydney by Crown will be unlike anything Sydney has seen before,” Mr Sunito said.

The final design was selected during a design competition held last year.

Sydney by Crown’s modern ground-floor retail precinct and through-site laneway was a unique aspect of Koichi Takada Architects’ winning design which incorporates five-star resort-style amenities, Mr Sunito added.

“Sydney by Crown will be a modern, relaxed place where locals and visitors alike can stay, meet friends and enjoy a taste of Sydney,” Mr Sunito said.

Lead Architect Koichi Takada said Sydney by Crown’s new retail ground floor and laneway activation will be a memorable destination in heart of city.

“Sydney by Crown will be a symbol of history and future of the City of Sydney – with a heavy brick masonry podium and lightweight, high-tech residential tower rising above. The organic and fluid form of the new architectural crown feature will add a distinctive character to the city skyline, and offer a new stylish city living that is exclusive to Sydney.”

“We hope Sydney-siders will find the new laneway to be a lively intersection and public meeting place between three active city streets – Clarence, Kent and King Street,”

“The podium building blocks, create a sequence of vertical voids, a seven-storey opening to the through-site link and a central nine-storey atrium, which allow natural light to reach the centre of the site.“

“The articulated base and soaring voids make the architectural expression dramatic. Unlike many arcades and laneways in the city, these links have a grandness to the scale, that enhances the spatial quality and enjoyment of the space. It aims to draw people into and through the site.”

“Designed to enrich and regenerate public amenity – Skittle laneway has an intriguing character with a link to the historical and heritage character around the site,” Mr Takada said.

Australia’s largest city and capital of New South Wales, Sydney has a population of 4.6 million people, expected to reach 6 million in 2036. The economy of New South Wales is Australia’s largest with a GDP of $455 billion per year, exceeding the GDP of Singapore and Malaysia.

Sydney by Crown is projected to have a gross realisation value of AU$250 million.

This year, Crown Group plans to launch more than $1 Billion worth of projects in Sydney’s CBD, Green Square and Waterloo.

Sydney by Crown will feature approximately 220 studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses with a component of apartments to be luxury serviced apartments.
