(Sydney, Australia) Thursday, August 28, 2014 – A luxury Sydney penthouse has become the ultimate real-life gallery for a leading Australian furniture retailer.

After 17 years inspiring interior designers across Australia, Sydney-based furniture and homewares retailer and wholesaler Spence & Lyda have teamed with Australian property developer Crown Group to create the ultimate in luxury living in the inner-city ring suburb of Waterloo.

Located less than 5 km from Sydney’s Central Business District, the brand-new three-bedroom Viking by Crown penthouse sits on the top floor of Crown Group’s new architecturally-designed building and will open to the public from the first week of October.

Spence & Lyda founder Fiona Spence said she was delighted when Crown Group asked her to style the 212 sq m penthouse with views across Sydney’s skyline.

After a successful career in costume design, living and working in Sydney and Los Angeles, including styling music videos for likes of Michael Jackson and Phil Collins, Fiona returned to her hometown in the ‘80s and started Spence & Lyda.

Spence & Lyda has since earned a reputation for creating stunning highly-livable interiors across Australia and are known for sourcing the best furniture and design pieces from around the globe.

In styling the Viking by Crown luxury penthouse, Spence & Lyda focused on bringing the outside world in, Fiona explained.

“When I first walked into the apartment I was drawn to the living room and the outdoor space,” Fiona said.

“We were standing there as the sun went down and I was struck by the amazing quality of natural light. We worked with the apartment’s own elements to bring that light in.”

To furnish the modern penthouse Spence & Lyda selected an eclectic combination of one-of-a-kind pieces; including an old Javanese wooden cart refashioned into a coffee table, woven wicker chairs sourced from Denmark and porcelain lights hand thrown in Melbourne.

Art by Guy Maestri and Camie Lyons from the Olsen Irwin Gallery are a focal point on the walls.

Minutes from the sophisticated cultural hub, restaurants and cafes at Danks Street, the 10-storey building was designed by innovative Bondi-based architects MPRDG and inspired by the work of internationally-renowned Israeli artist Yaacov Agam – founder of the post-war kinetic art movement and creator of ground-breaking sculpture, paintings and architecture.

Viking by Crown has two main facades, floor-to-ceiling glass, picturesque views and oversized, luxurious apartments.

The building’s design and location close to Sydney’s heart, helped to inspire the interior style used in the penthouse, Fiona explained.

“We wanted to dress the space in such a manner that visitors have a sense of the personality of the people living here, or soon to be. These people have traveled, they are in a good place in their lives where ease of living is important but so too are the finer things in life,” she said.

“The architecture in general is inspirational, from the generosity of the arched entry void to the interesting use of moveable screens for light and heat regulation. The scheme is considered and well put together so designing an interior for it was a pleasure. The other very nice thing is the size of the rooms; too many developments are skimping on size. This apartment encourages entertaining and living in general with pleasures like a walk-in robe and a dedicated study space.”

Crown Group’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Adam Sparkes, said the penthouse offers a unique opportunity for Sydneysiders.

More than 98 per cent of Viking by Crown’s apartments has sold ahead of the building’s expected completion this October.

“Crown Group is dedicated to creating apartments which offer more than simply a living space,” Mr Sparkes said

“Spence & Lyda have a reputation for creating beautiful, luxurious concepts and Viking by Crown presents the perfect canvas for exceptional pieces.

“The opening of the new penthouse will be a chance for property and design enthusiasts to step inside one of Crown Group’s coveted luxury Sydney penthouses, and see it for themselves.”

Viking by Crown’s unique design, large apartment sizes and facilities including a pool, combined with the lifestyle benefits of a short commute to the city create the epitome of low-maintenance, luxurious lifestyle, Mr Sparkes said.

“It is a cosmopolitan sanctuary close to the heart of Sydney,” he said.

Viking by Crown features 110 apartments, a stunning 25-metre pool, a fully-equipped gymnasium and a ground-floor terrace cafe.

The popular residential development is located at 30-36 O’Dea Avenue, Waterloo, 5km from Sydney’s central business district, 5km from Sydney Airport and 9km from iconic Bondi beach.
